Casting the 7'10" Node-less Five

This First video is casting with a Wulff Bamboo Special #5 Line. Hard to see, bad video but you get the idea. Open it up to full screen and play it on HD to see it better. 

There is no leader on the Bamboo Special and the Cortland just had a butt section. Just wanted to give an idea of what this rod is like. It was also pretty windy.

The next Video is with a Cortland Peach DT5. Fast forward to about 3 minutes to see the rod being casted at an angle you can see better. Easier to see the line. I don't like this line as much as the Bamboo line with this rod. This is a long video because I have no clue what I am doing so just skim through it.

Wrapping Another 7' 2/2 Four Weight

Here is another 7' 2/2 Four weight getting wrapped.. This rod is Node-less. The only color in the cane is from the two step heat treatment in the oven. The person that this rod is being built for wanted some color in the signature wrap. I wasn't sure at first how these colors would mesh before I varnished them. I think it worked out pretty well though.

Rod # N431606 For Sale

Here is Rod # N431606. It is My version of a Payne 98. This is a nice crisp medium fast rod for a Four weight line.

I use this taper quite a bit with a Triangle Taper Four weight line for fishing dry flies on small to medium sized streams.  This rod has a nice crisp action with this line.

7' Four Weight

Node-less construction.

UHU Epoxy

This is a 2/2 rod. Two piece Two tips.

The Cane is alternating flamed and blonde strips of bamboo which have all been heat treated in an oven also.

The cork grip is 5 1/2" and a perfect fit.

Guides are Snake Brand. (9)

Ferrules are a size 12 Hariki step down.

The wraps at the winding check are Classic Chestnut tipped in Four turns of Claret and Black Silk bands.

There are Three Four turn wraps one at 12" from the bottom of the cork, One at 15" and One at 18"

The main wraps are Black silk tipped in Classic Chestnut.

I have fished My Node - less Five weight for Smallmouth that measured in pounds not inches with poppers just to put it to the test. No problems and no failure.

Rod #N - 431606

This Two piece Two tip rod is now done and drying. It is another Payne 98 taper. Light and dark strip Node - less. I will post more photos of the rod when it is all finished up. Still needs the gloss varnish to be rubbed out and then polished. Reel seat will then be added.

Rod # N - 431607

My version of a Paul Young Midge. My favorite small stream fly rod. This rod will be a node - less Two piece single tip rod for a Four weight line.

Here are the strips planed out to be glued up.

Rod # N - 361608

Yet another Two piece Two tip Payne 98. This rod is also node - less and in the process of being final planed.

The Color of Cane

Here are some strips for a 7' 2/2 Four Weight rod based on a Payne 98. Rod # N - 431608. These sticks are ready to be spliced. No flaming has been done to this culm. It was oven treated in two steps to get the moisture out of the bamboo and add a little bit of color. 

Dipping Rod #N - 431606 Nodeless 7' 2/2 Four Weight

This rod is now final dipped and drying to be polished.

Rod #N - 431607 Nodeless 2/1 Four Weight

This rod has been tapered to .030 over final dimension. Time to clean up the strips, straighten again and then final taper and glue.

Strength of a Node - Less Strip

Here is a shot of a node - less strip being bent in half to show the strength of the splices. There are Three splices in this strip. On in the very middle at the arc of the bend,  and one on either side. There was no failure in this strip and the splices stayed completely in tact. I wouldn't do this to a rod, but you get the idea.

Wrapping and Varnishing Rod 431606

Here are the wraps for the 7' 2/2 for a Four weight line. The Signature wrap is Classic Chestnut Gossamer Silk tipped in Claret and Black Gossamer. The main wraps of the rod are wrapped in Black Gossamer tipped with Classic Chestnut. There are Three Four turn wraps that are at 12" , 15" and 18" from the bottom of the grip. The ferrules are wrapped in Black and tipped in Classic Chestnut. This rod will be dipped as soon as the wraps are dry. It will be available if anyone is looking for a crisp 

medium fast Four weight.

You can see the dark and light spliced strips in this photo. Maybe a little over the top for some, but I like the look.

Rod# N - 431606

I have not updated in a while. Been keeping busy though. This rod will be for sale after it is wrapped and varnished. It is another rod based on a Payne 98. Again a 7' for a Four line. It is a Two piece Two tip rod. Node-less construction with blonde and light flamed alternating strips. This rod will have Hariki extra short size 12/64th step down ferrules. My new style 5 1/2" grip. A shop made winding check and also My new up locking reel seat design shown in the photos below. 

The reel seat is made up of Spanish Cedar with a slice of Pheasant Wood. It has not been buffed and polished out yet. Looks a little dull here. It will all come together though.

Rod# N - 431605

 Here is the 7' for a Four Line after final dipping. This is a dark flamed node-less rod. Two piece with one tip. This rod was flamed darker than the customer liked, so........

I need a replacement for a shop rod that I turned into kindle when I slammed it under the folding seats of My Jeep.

Rod# N - 431607

This rod will be a node-less 6'3" for a Four Weight. It will have alternating blonde and light flamed splices also.

Here is a shot of the threads during the thread varnishing process for Rod #431605. This rod will be ready to dip after a couple more thinned coats. Three dips in the tank. Let it dry and then polish it out. With a lot of sanding and prep in between dips. You can see the very end of the splice sticking out.

This will be another Seven Foot for a Four Line. The Strips are ready for roughing. It will be an alternating Light and Dark strip spliced node-less rod. Two piece with Two tips. This rod is not spoken for. Soooooo. If anyone is interested it will be available.
